Students at Florida High School in Miami-Dade County and Polk County recently celebrated their influence as mentors in the Barbara Bush Foundation’s Teen Trendsetters® Reading Mentoring Program, made possible by the support of State Farm.

Teen Trendsetters is a reading mentoring program that pairs teenage mentors with first, second and third grade students who are on average four months behind. Teens are trained as reading mentors and regularly hold one-on-one mentor sessions with mentees, using a curriculum specially designed to improve their children’s reading skills.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Barbara Bush Foundation avoided disruption of service to distance learners by launching a new digital model of the teen trendsetter program in 2020. A struggling elementary school reader can effectively meet a mentor through district approval. A conference call platform with full online access to program materials. This allows you to continue building your literacy skills wherever you are learning.

State Farm is a longtime champion of the Barbara Bush Foundation and the Teen Trendsetters Program, and has provided over $ 1.1 million in support since 2004. Since the launch of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, we have provided $ 100,000 to support the program. The Barbara Bush Foundation is rapidly pivoting to serve both remote and face-to-face learners.

Jose Soto, State Farm’s Corporate Responsibility Analyst, said: “I’m thrilled with everything these students have achieved, whether they’re learning directly or virtually. With the skills they’re building today, for years to come. We know that it will pave the way for success. “

Teen Trendsetters are regularly evaluated by independent third-party researchers and have achieved impressive results. Evaluations for the 2019-2020 academic year revealed that the reading comprehension of participating students improved to a grade level of 1.06 in 7 months, showing that they grew 56% more than the average student expected. I did. Teen mentors have gained time for community services and reported improvements
Leadership, communication and teamwork skills.

“Experts across the country predict that COVID-19 could delay students of all generations by a year, so young and struggling readers can get the support they need to keep progress. It’s more important than ever, “said A. Robinson of the United Kingdom.Barbara Bush President and Chief Executive Officer
Foundation. “State Farm is grateful to have evolved this long-term program to serve remote learners at their most important times and help keep students from being left behind. “

Early grade reading is an important indicator of future success. Students who do not read well by the end of third grade are four times more likely to graduate from school without a diploma than good readers. The teen trendsetter program works to fill this gap
Leverage an innovative combination of high-quality curriculum, research-proven mentoring skills, and parental involvement.

In addition to improving the literacy of young readers, the program, in Barbara Bush’s words, provides parents with the resources to play an essential role as the “first and best teacher” of their children. .. Each book that the child reads with a teenage mentor is added to their home library.
A parent guide will accompany you to attract caregivers by providing literacy activities at home. Parent guides also provide free access to the Adult Literacy app for parents who want to improve their literacy skills without attending classes.
