The connection you need to know – Wichita, Kansas

Wichita, Kansas (KSNW) – More than 11,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Tokyo Summer Olympics, some of whom call Kansas their hometown.

“Before watching the Olympics, no one knows, but I’m excited about the Olympics,” said Olympian father Kristen Stewart.

This year, that premise changed for Chris and Loristewart — their daughter Kelsey Stewart is competing in the USA softball team.

“I asked her, and she said it was the first time she was nervous about playing softball for a long time,” Lori said.

While Kelsey’s eyes are paying attention to the prize, many young eyes returning to Wichita are paying attention to her.

“There are a lot of girls and we’re trying to grow the game, so what you know is very uplifting,” said Chris. “So when we’re trying to grow the game, this seems like a big deal knowing that girls can participate in the Olympics in our area.”

For Wichita natives and Olympic athletes Lynette Woodard, She is nailed to the game.

“Really because it just brings a warm fuzzy. You know I did it, that is, when you’re in it, you can’t see it, but when you’re sitting from the outside I’m very proud of it, “said Woodard.

Woodard competed in 1980 and 1984.

“A lot of dedication, a lot of effort, and it certainly pays off,” she said.

Woodard brought back more than the gold medal he had won. This is a valuable experience she will never forget.

“It was a lot of fun and it was time to get to know other people and experience each other while not competing with each other,” Woodard added.
