    The price of the vintage Manta A model has been rising for a long time, and given its cult status, it fits naturally when Opel was looking for a suitable candidate for Restmod as an electrified showcase. Opel engineers have turned the Manta A into a compact, sporty stand-alone EV.

    The original manta ray was equipped with a 60-105 horsepower rated 1.2, 1.6, and 1.9 liter 4-cylinder engine. The top GT / E was rated at 117 mph and took about 11 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 mph, accentuated by the typical powerful sound of Opel.

    The electrical conversion brings power to 147 horsepower, which is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission. Gear rowing is possible, but not required. You can also set it to 4th speed as it is. The out-of-the-box 188 lb-foot torque makes the first three gears completely optional.

    A relatively small 31.0 kW battery pack that can be recharged at 9 kW limits cruising range to 125 miles, but also helps reduce weight to about 2500 lbs. This EV is agile and likes to turn corners. In particular, the Ronal wheels’ 195 / 40R-17 front and 205 / 40R-17 rear tires provide a much better grip than Manta’s original rubber.

    Opel calls the one-off EV the Manta GSe, but in the days of the Manta A, the GS and GS / E designations were reserved for the range of luxury Commodores. Visually, this was very successful. The repair work was done. The glass and panels remain intact, the chrome bumpers are gone, the quad headlights replace Opel’s current headlight style, and the quad tail lamps are replaced by LED units. While retaining the black bonnet that is characteristic of Opel’s sporty model, the “visor” that takes up space on the grill can display a slightly cramped message such as “I am on a zero-e-mission.”

    The interior is reinforced with ultra-futuristic display panels, the original airbag-free steering wheel is marked at 12 o’clock, and the headliner is covered with Alcantara. As a fun touch, the recovery rate can be adjusted with the classic slider at the bottom of the center screen.

    With the sensibility of the collector’s scene in mind, Opel quickly points out that the Manta GSe was created from a car that needed repair anyway. Untouched examples are not mentioned. And they even point out that it is possible to restore this example to its original state. What we say: Don’t do it. And find a way to commercialize this.
