Las Vegas (KLAS) — We are beginning to delve into our own history here on Channel 8. Our station was once owned by the eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes. There is a building called “Hughes House” in the parking lot, where he stayed in the 1950s.
The green bungalow was once part of the hotel. There is a bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and dining room with a large table.
I’ve been standing in this place since the 50’s.
Hughes fell in love with Las Vegas and leased Las Vegas during the decade.
At that time, it was adjacent to the Desert Inn Hotel and stood at the Sun Villa Motel, later known as the Blair House Motel.
Neither is here anymore, but the house is still tall.
Bungalows have also appeared on the big screen, appearing in the classic Las Vegas gangster movie casino.
The film tells the story of Las Vegas gangsters Lefty Rosenthal and Tony Spirotro, played by Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
In the movie, it was used as the home of the character played by James Woods. Seen when the Sharon Stone character escapes to Los Angeles with him.
Hughes was a well-known film lover and filmmaker.
Inside the house are classic fuse items, such as old rotary phones, and classic aerial photographs of fuses on the walls.
Hughes bought Channel 8 in the 70’s after staying in this bungalow, but there’s a lot of interesting stories to share about this house over the next few months.
