The Ontario Government is helping launch technology to detect early illness warnings

The Government of Ontario, Canada, has invested more than $ 1.5 million in Myant Inc. through the Ontario Together Fund to help commercialize “connected wearables.” Related to COVID-19. The project is expected to employ 80 people.

“Ontario has world-leading talent in innovation and life sciences,” said Big Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, in an official press release.

Myant Inc., a Canadian small business in the healthcare sector, has created a textile computing platform by embedding biometric sensors in fabrics and creating wearables connected to textile-based medical devices under the brand name Skiin. Developed.

Everyday clothing with embedded sensors can track the wearer’s vital signs through Myant’s Connected Care Life app. This information can be shared with personal care circles, including family members and healthcare providers, enabling remote patient monitoring and real-time decision making to improve patient care.

The Ontario investment will help Myant accelerate the commercialization of Skiin by implementing a broad community-based rollout of its products. Myant manufactures Skiin kits that will be distributed to approximately 2,500 study participants and will conduct the study in collaboration with Algoma University and Sault Area Hospital.

Trial participants will wear Skiin clothing for 3-4 months. Clinicians monitor their health through mobile apps and data platforms, and college students studying computer science or biomedical engineering monitor the user experience of both participants and clinicians.

Through this project, Myant will learn and test how to deploy the system with several key stakeholders, including hospitals, public health agencies, doctors, and home healthcare professionals. Once commercialized, Skiin will be manufactured at its facility in Toronto.
