New Delhi — The COVID-19 infection in India broke daily records as demand for medical oxygen surged seven-fold and the government denied reports of slow distribution of life-saving supplies abroad.
The number of newly confirmed cases exceeded 400,000 for the second time.
by Johns HopkinsIn India, more than 412,000 new cases of COVID-19 were seen on Wednesday. This is a record in India, the world record for most cases recorded by one country per day.
The country also recorded more than 400,000 cases on April 30.
These records are part of a disturbing increase in cases that have increased since mid-March. Over the last 15 days, India has experienced at least 300,000 new cases daily.
The death toll also surged during that period. Inda confirmed a record 3,980 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, with at least 3,000 deaths from the virus daily since April 27.
The disturbing surge in incidents has led to a shortage of national health care supplies.
According to a news report, 11 COVID-19 patients died when oxygen line pressure suddenly dropped at a government medical college hospital in South India, probably due to a valve failure.
Hospital oxygen demand has skyrocketed since last month as India has set up a large oxygen plant and scrambled to transport it.
Sea bridges have been set up to carry oxygen tankers by ferry from Bahrain and Kuwait.
