Seven people injured in shooting outside Indianapolis Mall, all children and teens, police say
Seven minors were injured and hospitalized after a shooting in downtown Indianapolis late Saturday night, police said.
The shooting, which occurred just after 11 p.m. local time on the outskirts of the city's Circle Center mall, left children and teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 with gunshot wounds. CBS affiliate station WTTV We shared images from the scene.
Indianapolis Metro Police say no suspects have been arrested, but investigators believe multiple weapons were used in the shooting. A police report filed after the incident identified four boys and three girls as the victims, and Indianapolis Police Deputy Chief Tanya Terry provided preliminary details about the incident during a news conference early Sunday morning. All patients were said to be in stable condition.
Police said patrol officers in the downtown area were the first to respond after hearing several gunshots nearby. They found six minors among a larger group of children with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported everyone to the hospital for treatment. One of the victims was in critical condition when transported, but his classification has been updated and he is now stable. The other five victims were in stable condition when transported.
A seventh victim, who police determined was shot in the same incident downtown, was treated as a walk-in at a different hospital. Indianapolis police say the person is in stable condition.
The shootings come as the city of Indianapolis continues to grapple with a steady increase in gun violence.Reported by indianapolis star Last year, it was found that homicides in the city – mostly those involving firearms – had increased by 85% over the past decade and a half.
Terry mentioned that in Sunday's press conference.
“We are once again seeing young people using firearms to settle disputes and this has to stop,” he said. Terry said the department has already committed resources to efforts to “address these groups of youth before the crimes begin” and will continue to do so in hopes of “preventing these types of crimes.”
The deputy chief also asked parents for help.
“We ask parents to be involved in their children being out and about, especially at this time of the evening,” Terry said. “This was 11:30 at night, the night just before Easter Sunday. So I think if you don't know where your 12-year-old son is, that should be your priority.”
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Albert Teeters of the department's homicide unit.
