Pittsburgh (KDKA) – A new scam is taking place claiming to be a major regional bank.

A scam text message alleging a problem with PNC Bank’s account was answered on the phone, targeting one of the cybersecurity experts and quickly turning out to be a scammer.

“My reaction was immediately’I can’t believe they’re trying to do this,'” said Albert Whale, founder of IT Security Solutions.

How did Whale quickly find out that this was a scam?

“I don’t have a PNC account,” he said.

So as soon as the message arrived on his phone, a red flag was set up.

“When I looked up the number I wanted to call next, it was 412,” he recalls.

It wasn’t the phone number associated with a PNC Bank branch or part of the bank, but he decided to call anyway.

“Enter your 9-digit Social Security number, followed by the pound sign.” An automatic message was displayed.

“Soon social security … oh, that’s going to work,” Whale recalled.

Then an automatic message asks for his PIN, and finally …

“Enter all 16 digits on your debit or credit card, followed by the pound sign.” said.

For cyber security professionals, this is not just a problem.

“I’m sure a lot of people will be hooked on this. They may give up more information,” Whale said.

So how much can a person lose from now on?

“They could confiscate their entire bank account,” the whale replied.

When I contacted PNC about the text, PNC recognized it.
