Dozens of ducks milled around a pond in the Orange Irvine Regional Park early in the cool recent morning. Most were mallards and wood ducks, and there were coots and many others. In the middle of this familiar collection of waterfowl, Bob was a mandarin duck with boldly colored wings that stood out from all other ducks.

When the glamorous mandarin duck enters a crowded room, all conversations stop and the head spins. Called by many of the most beautiful ducks in the world, it certainly looks like it when floating in a local pond with other ducks.

Mandarin ducks have been found throughout Orange County for many years, including Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Anaheim, and Orange. Small ducks are native to East Asia.

In recent years, mandarin ducks have begun to emerge far from their homeland, including Central Park in New York and much of Western Europe.

“Some people keep a collection of waterfowl. Birds are descendants of fleeing or released birds,” said Sylvia Gallagher, a bird identification instructor and expert at Orange County.

“They are clearly feeling relaxed and are being established,” she added. “I think the American Ornithological Society has not yet recognized them as” established. ” “
