ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com)-Thousands of veterans in the St. Louis region have been eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to authorities, veterans registered with St. Louis VA over the age of 65, or veterans of age with underlying illness or illness, can book vaccination.
Veterans must register with St. Louis VA, but do not need to be actively cared for. Both Chuck Von Bokel and his brother Marty were able to take part in the Vietnam War, make several phone calls and then promise to get the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.
“I didn’t intend to get it until May or June, so when I learned I got it on Friday, I danced happy all day,” Chuck said.
Dr. Patricia McKelby, a primary care physician at St. Louis VA, said she began vaccination of hospitalized veterans a few weeks ago.
On Monday, they began vaccination of qualified outpatient veterans. The vaccine will be given at Jefferson Barracks and will also be available from Thursday at the VA Clinic on 2727 Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis.
“We have sought to increase the number of channels veterans can use to communicate with us, as responses can overwhelm the telephone system,” McKelby said.
Instead of making a phone call, McKelby urges veterans to send an email to stlcovidvetvaccine@VA.gov to make an appointment. She said they are working to vaccinate all veterans who want the vaccine. For currently unqualified veterans, McKelby said the Veterans Affairs Department would send them a letter when it was time to get the vaccine.
She said they are working to extend their time in the clinic and offer reservations over the weekend to ensure that all veterans they want are vaccinated.
“Our goal is to vaccinate all veterans,” McKelby said. “It’s our overkill goal of immunizing everyone who wants to be vaccinated, and we’re doing everything we can to achieve it.”
