Honolulu, Hawaii 2021-04-09 04:35:04 –

Honolulu (KHON2) — Tuesday, April 13th is the last day a driver’s license or state ID that has expired after March 2020 will be considered valid.

The city and county of Honolulu say thousands of drivers are lagging behind in renewals.

Between March 2020 and March 2021, more than 70,000 people needed to renew their driver’s license, according to the city’s Customer Service Department. However, this number may include those who have left Hawaii or who have died.

“I know there’s still a bit of log jam left, but I also know that we were able to create more accommodation for the open schedule.”

Customer Service Director, Nori Miyazaki

Some of the changes they made in early March 2021 were to limit reservations to people whose licenses were set to expire within three months, and to allow people to make multiple reservations. Includes blocking and overbooking to supplement the no-show.

Customer Service Director Nola Miyasaki said the change reduced the backlog of about 20,000 people.

They made another change during the week of Monday, March 22nd, allowing some satellite city halls to walk in with an express window. Express windows are available in 6 of the 9 locations.

These include Ala Moana, Kapālama, Kapolei, Pearlridge, Wahiawa and Windward City. Due to lack of space, there are no walk-ins in Downtown, Hawaii Kai and Waianae Satellite City Hall.

“We are still limited by social distance requirements and cannot provide express lane service at the three locations in Satellite City Hall. If we can do everything, we can release more reservations.” Said Miyazaki.

According to Miyazaki, unlicensed transactions can be done at the express counter. These include paying water or property taxes, getting a handicap placard, selling a bus pass, a spray / neutral certificate, and renewing your car.

Reservations are still required to renew your driver’s license, ID, and transfer titles.More information about this You can find it on the city website..

“Free up more AlohaQ appointments by allowing simpler, unlicensed transactions to be performed on a walk-in basis via faster express lines.”

According to the city, there is currently a backlog with scrutineering mailed to us and we recommend walking in or using one of the DMV Now kiosks for quick registration.

“Currently, the unprocessed portion of the vehicle registration continues for about 6 to 8 weeks, so it will take a long time to mail it,” Miyazaki said.

Miyazaki is also considering extending business hours at some satellite city halls to clear the backlog and address the additional 26,000 people who need to renew their licenses in the next three months. I said there is.

“It will be a great help to allow us to actually open our driver’s license counter for overtime hours,” Miyazaki said.

The city’s customer service department said it could still take months to catch up.

The city and county of Honolulu said they expected the governor to extend the deadline.

The Governor’s Office told KHON 2 that it would be included in the next emergency declaration.
