Denver (AP) —A Civil War statue killed by protesters outside the Colorado General Assembly in the summer is replaced with a sculpture of a Native American woman mourning the atrocities of the Sand Creek massacre.
Colorado Public Radio reports that the Capitol Construction Advisory Board voted in favor of the new sculpture on Friday after hearing from a tribal representative who suffered from Sand Creek 156 years ago.
The statue was erected on July 24, 1909 and contained the name of the colonel who commanded the slaughter. The monument collapsed on June 25 and is now in the Colorado History Museum.
