Tampa, Florida (WFLA) — After November, the Atlantic hurricane season is over.

Before the season began on June 1, forecasters predicted another season of above-average tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin. So how was the actual season measured? Season outlook??

It may seem that this season wasn’t as active as expected. Probably because of the storm that stayed on the water instead of affecting the land, it was above average in 2021.

Based on data from 1991 to 2020, the average number of named storms seen during the Atlantic hurricane season is 14, including seven hurricanes. NOAA Climate Prediction Center forecasts There were 15 to 21 named storms this year, including 7 to 10 hurricanes, of which 3 to 5 were expected to be large. Colorado State University predicts 18 named storms with 8 hurricanes – 4 of them are major.

Nothing is expected to happen during the next week, and the 2021 hurricane season could end with a total of 21 named storms, including seven hurricanes. Four of the storms have evolved into major hurricanes, reaching category 3 or higher strength. The major hurricanes in 2021 were Hurricane Race, Hurricane Aida, Hurricane Rally and Hurricane Sam.

Only eight of the 21 named storms this year have landed in the United States.

Hurricane Aida landed in Louisiana as a major category 4 storm. This is the only major hurricane that has affected the United States this year and is one of the two hurricanes that have landed in the United States. Nicholas was another hurricane, landing in Texas as a Category 1 storm.

Claudette landed in Louisiana early in the morning of June 19. Just as it was finally organized into a tropical cyclone. The storm did not maintain its strength for a long time and weakened to a tropical cyclone later that same day.

Tropical Cyclone Danny was a small tropical cyclone that landed in South Carolina on June 28th. Immediately after landing, it weakened to a tropical cyclone.

Elsa On July 6, the strength of the hurricane was reached as it traveled offshore and over the west coast of Florida. It then weakened again into a tropical cyclone before landing in northern Florida on July 7.

Less than a month after Elsa, Tropical Cyclone Fred landed in eastern Florida Panhandle on August 16.

Henri reached hurricane strength on August 21, but weakened before landing on August 22 along the coast of Rhode Island.

Tropical Cyclone Mindy was a short-lived storm that landed on the Florida Panhandle on September 8.

All names on the 2021 Tropical Cyclone Name List have been exhausted, starting with Ana and ending with Wanda. If another storm occurs after Wanda, it will be the first storm named using a new supplementary list from the World Meteorological Organization.

Prior to this year, Greek letters were used when the list of tropical cyclone names was exhausted before the end of the hurricane season. This happened in 2005 and reoccurred last year during the 2020 hurricane season. This year WMO Hurricane Commission has decided to retire Greek letters To avoid confusion and distractions.
