Tampa, Florida-The Biden administration has restricted travel from India due to a fatal surge in coronavirus cases and variants.
The new policy will come into effect on Tuesday at 12:01 am and will not apply to American citizens, legal permanent residents, or humanitarian workers.
India is currently experiencing the worst outbreaks in the world, creating tragic scenarios for some Tampa Bay residents to see emergencies from remote parts of the world.
“When you wake up, you just cross your fingers every day,” said Appanjit Singh. “You want and pray that the numbers will decrease.”
Appanjit Singh and Harpartap Singh, who live in Tampa Bay, have dozens of families in India.
They continue to communicate in the hope that the country will see some improvement in the spread of the virus.
“Last year we heard that other people were getting it,” Harpartap said. “Now we hear that the family is getting it. This is now reaching our home.”
Travel bans come after the numbers in India continue to grow rapidly. The country reported more than 368,000 new cases on Sunday alone.
India has reached the highest number of deaths per day to date, with more than 3,600 deaths on Sunday.
Harpartap Singh says his parents are vaccinated and stay at home as much as possible.
He warns that the deadly surge in India is an important reminder for everyone to stay alert.
“Don’t be self-satisfied. This can happen anywhere. I think it’s a lesson for the whole world.”
