Travis Air Force Base (CBS13) – The Space Race may be over, but a group of US Air Force members are about to take off to protect our country via the first ever Space Force.

Ten airmen at Travis Air Force Base swore on Friday to uphold the Constitution and moved to the first independent global space force. They are part of a group of 2,400 men and women who serve and protect in this new branch of the US military, founded in December 2019.

“It’s very exciting,” says Sr. Master Sgt. Said. Nicole Reynolds.

Reynolds is one of two women at Travis Air Force Base. She has been specializing in cyber operations for 21 years.

“I’m very used to moving. This is my 16th mission,” she said.

Reynolds knew there was more to learn and said the transition was likely to involve more trips.

“We have to undergo space training, so most of us (cyber and Intel groups) aren’t taught that in the Air Force, but we’re going to be space experts first. And our area of expertise is second, “she said.

Master Sergeant Jeffrey Heath is a cybersecurity specialist. His family was at hand when the group received a new jacket with a new US Space Force insignia. Behind the mask, he was shining with pride.

“It’s an opportunity to create a legacy that my son should follow, just as I followed in the footsteps of my father,” Heath said.

They protect and defend the forces of space and support things like satellites and space systems on behalf of the Air Force. Air Force soldiers, now guardians of the Space Force, are waiting for guidance on what will happen next.

“I hope to come up with some ideas next month,” Reynolds said.

These airmen will travel to bases nationwide, including Cape Canaveral, Florida, Colorado, and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
