Since then, she has spent countless hours at Valley Children’s Hospital, where she is receiving intensive chemotherapy.
However, when Reagan and her mother, Alyssa, arrived at the appointment a few weeks ago, she soon learned that she was being given the platelets she needed to continue treatment.
“It was necessary for children who are actively bleeding, so when it comes to that type of situation, they must prioritize those who are in the most urgent need. I know, “said Alyssa.
The following week, the family faced this problem over and over again-the valley did not have enough platelet donations to meet the needs of trauma and cancer patients like Reagan.
“That’s very scary,” Alyssa said. “You already have so much about how this chemotherapy affects her, how important her immunity is, and how you can prevent her from getting sick. I’m worried about that. “
This is a setback that occurs during the eight to nine months that Reagan’s doctors said weekly chemotherapy should be the most aggressive.
“If for some reason a significant delay occurs, it is more likely that the leukemia will recur or that resistance to the drug you are using will develop,” said Dr. Faisal Razaki.
According to the Central California Blood Center, the platelet collection process is a bit more complicated than traditional blood donations.
The screening is more detailed and donors can expect to spend more than an hour in a chair.
Jaime Bravo originally came to donate blood, but after hearing about the need for platelets, he decided it was worth the wait.
“For me, it’s all the same,” he said. “I’m here anyway, so whatever they need.”
Blood centers usually see the greatest needs before and after holidays, when donations are not in people’s minds.
Knowing the need has already turned to many of Reagan’s friends and family for help.
Officials at the Central California Blood Center say donating blood is a valuable way to eliminate a serious shortage, even if you donate platelets for a long time.
