As part of the A Better Red project, TriMet will add a second track to the Red Line section near Portland’s Gateway / Northeast 99th Avenue Transit Center stop and Portland International Airport. According to TriMet, the total cost of the project will be about $ 215 million.

The budget includes funding for four new light rail vehicles to accommodate improved service.

The agency recently secured $ 100 million in federal funding for the project from the Federal Department of Public Transport.

Work on signals and switches to enable new redline services along existing railroad tracks will begin this fall, according to government officials. TriMet will also build a new walkway and rest facility for MAX operators at the Fair Complex / Hillsboro Airport stop.

Officials said the extended Red Line service will begin in 2024.

Riders can expect the closure of some “park-and-ride” spaces at Fair Complex / Hillsboro Airport Station and the disruption of MAX services by the shuttle bus connecting the stations, officials said.

According to transportation, the project is expected to create up to 1,200 jobs in the region.

The project aims to provide 19% of design funding and 20% of construction funding to companies that support businesses owned by people of color and women.
