The best-selling author won the controversial and highly competitive Republican Senate Primary, backed by Donald Trump’s support for the race, which was widely seen as an early test of rule over the former president’s party. Vance’s victory ended a very painful and expensive primary contest, at which point two candidates were hitting the debate stage. And it shows a big win for Trump, who bet his reputation as a Republican champion on his ability to pull his chosen candidate across the finish line.

Democratic Nan Wellie, the former mayor of Dayton, will take over the incumbent Republican governor Mike Dewein in the general election after securing the nominations of both parties.

Vance called himself a “conservative outsider” and took the support of former President Donald Trump within three weeks of the Primary on Tuesday. He was seen participating in the election as a Republican front runner.

Vance is a Marine veteran and became known to a larger audience after Netflix released his book Hillbilly Elegy, which was made into a movie in 2020.

Vance was run on a platform that promised to restore US manufacturing bases, raise taxes on companies sending jobs abroad, dismantle Big Tech’s monopoly, and deal with inflation.
