Washington (AP) — President Donald Trump’s denunciation trial is on the day of the inauguration, as Democrat Joe Biden takes an oath of office at the more unusual end of the defeated president’s term at the White House. It may start.

The timing is not set and depends heavily on when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi decides to send the impeachment article to the Senate. Democrats, who want to avoid suspending Biden’s inauguration, have suggested refraining from doing so until the new president has the opportunity to move his administration.

What is clear is that this trial, unlike any other trial in the history of the country, will be the first trial in which the president is no longer in office. And politically, it stood by Trump through his presidency, among some Republicans who primarily allowed him to spread false attacks against the integrity of the 2020 elections. Will force the calculation.

“The only way to unite this broken and divided country is to shed light on the truth,” said Republican Madeleine Dean, impeachment manager.

“That was the impeachment vote. That’s what the Senate trial was about.”

Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives on Wednesday in a deadly siege of the Capitol. The only president in US history was impeached twice after a Trump-backed mob raided the building. The attack left the country’s capital and other major cities under high security in the threat of more violence around the inauguration.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is open to considering impeachment, telling his peers that he ended up with Trump, but he hasn’t signaled how he will vote.

Republican leaders have a great influence on his party, even though convening trials is one of his last actions as a majority leader. Two new senators from Georgia, both Democrats, are to be sworn in to the office, leaving a room divided into 50-50. The Vice President is a tiebreaker, so when Kamala Harris takes office, it suggests a majority to the Democratic Party.

The president, convicted in the Senate, needs two-thirds of the votes against Trump, a very high hurdle like never before. But that’s not out of the realm of possibilities. In particular, businesses and wealthy political donors are distant from Trump and the Republicans who are trying to overturn the elections.

At least four Republican senators have publicly expressed serious concern about Trump’s actions, others personally say so.

In the Senate procedure, the trial begins shortly after the House of Representatives submits an impeachment article. That could mean starting at 1:00 pm on the day of inauguration. The ceremony at the Houses of Parliament begins at noon.

Pelosi does not say when to take the next step to submit the impeachment article. This is the sole responsibility of the riot incitement. In 2019, after Trump’s first impeachment, she withheld an article for a while to set the stage for Senate action.

Mr Biden said the Senate should be able to split the time and do both. Go to trial and begin working on his priorities, including quick confirmation of cabinet candidates.

On the day of the inauguration, the Senate usually confirms part of the new president’s cabinet, especially the national security authorities. Biden’s selection of Avril Haynes as Director of National Intelligence will be held on Friday by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

“We are working with the Republicans to find a way forward,” said the office of Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

The House of Representatives voted 232-197 on Wednesday to impeach Trump, with the Houses of Parliament secured inside and outside by armed National Guard. Parliamentarians were fed up with the president’s call to “fight like hell” for the election results and voted just a week after violent Trump supporters raided the Capitol, and the proceedings went on. It was very fast.

Ten Republicans fled Trump and joined the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party said that if Congress should leave him unchecked before Biden’s inauguration on January 20, he would have to be held accountable and ominously warned of a “clear and present danger.”

The parliamentary riots surprised and offended lawmakers who were scrambled for security when the mobs descended, revealing the fragility of the country’s history of peaceful transfer of power.

Trapped in the White House and watching the minutes on television, Trump later made no mention of impeachment, but released a video statement urging supporters to refrain from further violence and confusion at Biden’s inauguration. ..

“Like you, I was shocked and deeply saddened by the disaster at the Capitol last week,” he said in his first condemnation of the attack. He said. “Mob violence goes against everything I believe and everything our movement represents …. My true supporters couldn’t downplay law enforcement.”

Trump was first impeached by the House of Representatives in 2019 over a deal with Ukraine, but the Senate was acquitted in 2020. This time he faced impeachment as a weakened leader, losing his own reelection and a majority of the Senate Republicans.

In claiming the “high crime and contempt” required by the Constitution, the four-page impeachment resolution spreads Biden’s election victory, including Trump’s own incendiary rhetoric and a rally near the White House that day. It depends on falsehood. The January 6 attack on the Houses of Parliament.

The impeachment resolution is also aimed at preventing Trump from running again.

Police officers in the Capitol died after being injured in a riot, and police shot and killed a woman during the siege. The other three died after authorities said they were first aid. The riot delayed counting the votes of the Electoral College, the final step in confirming Biden’s victory.

Ten Republican lawmakers, including Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the third-ranked leader of the House of Representatives, have accused Trump and voted to dismiss the Republican leadership and the party itself. She said in his office, “there was no more betrayal by the president.”

The president’s firm popularity with Republican members remains somewhat swaying, with most House Republicans voting not to impeach.

The Parliament building is very secure and there is a high fence around the complex. On Wednesday, lawmakers needed to screen a metal detector to enter the House room. A week ago, police and guns were pulled and the doors were blocked from the riots, causing some lawmakers to flock inside.

The impeachment bill is drawn from Trump’s own false statement about his election defeat to Biden. Judges across the country, including a judge appointed by Mr. Trump, have repeatedly dismissed proceedings disagreeing with the election results, and Mr. Trump’s ally, former Attorney General William Barr, has been a widespread fraud. He said there were no signs.

Some have questioned the impeachment of the president near the end of his term, but there is precedent. In 1876, under the Ulysses Grant administration, Secretary of the Army William Bernap was impeached by the House of Representatives on the day he resigned, and a few months later the Senate convened a trial. He was acquitted.
