The indictment noted that Barrack at the time had informally advised US authorities on Middle East policy and sought the appointment of senior US government positions, including a special envoy to the Middle East.

Indicted in the 74-year-old barracks were Matthew Grimes, 27, of Aspen, Colorado, and Rashid Sultan Rashid Al Malik Alshahi, a 43-year-old United Arab Emirates citizen.

Grimes, who worked for Barrack’s private equity firm Colony Capital, was arrested in California on Tuesday.

“Many times, Barrack called Alshahi the UAE’s” secret weapon “and advanced the foreign policy agenda in the United States,” the Justice Department said in a press release.

Barrack was also charged with obstructing justice and making multiple false statements during an interview with federal law enforcement agencies in June 2019.

Barrack lawyer Matthew Herrington told CNBC that his client was arrested in Los Angeles “despite having cooperated with the investigation from the beginning.”

Barrack resigned as CEO of Colony Capital in 2020. He resigned as chairman of the company in April.

Federal prosecutors have been investigating Barrack’s alleged work on behalf of the UAE for at least two years.

One of the events that caught their attention was a speech by Trump on energy policy as a presidential candidate in May 2016.

The indictment accused Barrack of “inserting words in praise of the UAE” in his speech and “sent an email to Alshahi to deliver a pre-draft of the speech to senior UAE officials.”

For the next two years, prosecutors said Barrack “received instructions and feedback from UAE officials in connection with the appearance of national media outlets used to promote the interests of the United Arab Emirates. Insists.
