Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) — Fight hunger through agriculture. That’s what the South Arizona Community Food Bank is working on. “I’ve been involved in this kind of atmosphere and nature since I was a kid,” said Jorge Pinon.
He has been farming at the Las Milpitas Community Farm since 2017. As you roam the pinon, you’ll see cherry tomatoes, peppers and squash.
“Co-operatives bring vegetables to farmers markets. Sometimes I go to see what’s going on,” Pinon said.
This is one way for such community farms to combat hunger through community food banks in southern Arizona.
Pinon says that getting fresh vegetables from the farm right away is second to none and can help reduce family costs. Rain has always been a great help as our monsoon is currently underway.
“We also use water from the city because it doesn’t rain enough, but that helps a lot,” Pinon said. Water harvesting is one of many topics Pinon learned through food bank workshops.
He says he learned not only about agriculture, but also about his own personal growth. “We help each other and learn from each other,” Pinon said.
