Tucson, Arizona — The mayor and council of Tucson have unanimously approved a water rate increase for Tucson Water customers living outside the city limits.
The difference is an additional charge added to the bills of people who live in Pima County but use the Tucson water system.
The city said customers in Pima County use 43% more water than customers in the city and need to increase their bills. They also said that customers outside the city have lost large amounts of water in septic tanks and have exhausted large amounts of urban infrastructure assets compared to their neighbors in the city.
The mayor and council voted on Tuesday and enacted hikes for these customers from December 1st.
People outside the city will have to pay an additional 10% on the water bill and a gradual charge according to the amount used.
Deputy Mayor Paul Cunningham said the money will be used to improve infrastructure and repay water debt from COVID-19.
