Tucson, Arizona (KGUN) —Tucson police warn Tucson about kidnapped phone fraud.

Officers say fraudsters are calling people by pretending to be relatives they are suffering from.

Police describe the caller as taking advantage of people’s emotions.

According to the department, a second person robs the “suffering family” of the phone and demands a ransom.

Officers point out that these phones may have a local area code, even though they come from outside South Arizona.

TPD has released the following online:

Phone scams often focus on getting people to act quickly and get rid of their emotions.

It is advisable to slow down to more accurately determine the authenticity of the phone.

Making a quick call to a family member can immediately reassure the victim that the call is fraudulent.

Victims can also ask questions that only the actual family knows, such as the names of other family members, pets, or other details that the caller may not know.

Anyone who receives a call related to this scam should report it to Federal Trade Commission..
