Corpus Christi, Texas — If you’ve boarded a Port Aranthus ferry in the last few years, you’ll have to see the large drilling rigs stored there. They are preparing to be withdrawn.
The first thing to notice about these rigs is that everything about them is big. The mooring unit is large. The largest ferry boat is thin.
The waterline shows that most of the substructure is underwater when unfolded. On Harbor Island, where they have stayed for almost five years, they sit at the bottom of 35 feet of water. Their fate has never been clear.
It was decided to remove them. One is already gone and two are heading to Turkey to be cut out for scrap. The next question is how do you get these things out of here? What is the process?
Some 30-40 horsepower tugs can help. Over the next few months, one or both of these Goliaths will be moved.
