Two Punahou students create vaccine hotline – Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu (KHON2) — If you have questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, or need help setting up your appointment, you can now call the vaccine hotline.

It was created by two Punahou High School students for a class project.

Elderly people Zoey Duan and Ellie Ochiai said they needed to make information more accessible after neighbors asked for help with booking vaccine reservations.

“I thought there must be other people with the same experience,” Duane said, referring to her interaction with her neighbors. “Especially if there are language barriers, if you come from a low-income family, or if you come from a rural community where technology is difficult to access.”

Ochiai said that was the motivation for their project.

“What we most wanted was to enable Hawaii to reach its vaccination target of at least 70%,” Ochiai said. “We wanted to help bring the economy back to pre-pandemic life.”

Zoe and Erie said they worked with the Ministry of Health to help create the hotline.

To disseminate information, the two students distribute leaflets to businesses across the island in many different languages.

The vaccine hotline number is 808-204-4333.
