Corpus Christi, Texas — The Corpus Christi Coast Guard Air Base is often referred to to track fishing vessels from Mexico that are illegally catching fish in US waters.

Coast Guard officials said they had a busy year along the state’s coastline as they prevented nearly 80 Mexican fishing vessels from illegally catching fish in US waters.

Major Daniel Ipporito of the United States Coast Guard base on South Padre Island said he didn’t know what to find when he stopped the boat.

“We have now stopped from £ 100 on board to £ 2,500 on board, wherever we are, by the time we reach them,” Ipporito said.

Over the year, 78 launchers were suspended and seized with a catch of approximately £ 15,000. The launcher is a 20 to 30-foot fishing vessel, and the Coast Guard states that it can carry red sea bream and sharks. Mr. Ipporito said he has seven dedicated boats to stop illegal fishing drugs and migrant activities, as well as search and rescue missions.

“The Coast Guard will use this twin-engine plane from Corpus Christi headquarters to find a launcher in the Gulf.”

According to Ipporito, many fishermen have been caught many times, but each time they are caught, the boat is confiscated and never hits the water again.

“We put the boat on the premises of the station and after a certain amount of time we destroy the boat,” Ipporito said.

The Coast Guard began chasing Mexican fishing vessels in the late 1980s. They say they have seen an increase in the number of these fishermen in our waters over the past few years. Statistics show that nearly 300 of these launchers have been down for the past three years.
