U.S. health officials agreed to purchase 105 million COVID vaccine doses for fall campaign – Fresno, California

Washington-US health officials said Wednesday that they had agreed to purchase another 105 million Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines in anticipation of the fall booster campaign.

The $ 3.2 billion deal announced by the Biden administration takes place when federal scientists are looking at ways to renew vaccines to better protect Americans from the rapidly evolving virus.

Federal officials said the purchase agreement includes the option to purchase a total of 300 million doses, including a mixture of both adult and child doses.

The first shot will be delivered by early fall while the Food and Drug Administration waits for a decision to approve a new version of the shot.

A decision is expected from the FDA within a few days after the meeting on Tuesday. At this meeting, an outside advisor recommended that the vaccine be modified to better target Omicron variants.

Current vaccines maintain strong protection against hospitalization and death, but with the advent of Omicron, their ability to stop infection has declined significantly.

It’s not yet clear to whom the fine-tuned boosters will be offered-they can only be encouraged by the elderly or those at high risk of the virus. However, when the FDA decides to change the recipe, Pfizer and its competitor Moderna will need to seek approval for the appropriately updated dose. This is the time for health authorities to decide on an autumn strategy.

The announcement on Wednesday came as the billions of dollars required by the Biden administration to buy additional vaccines, tests and drugs to fight the pandemic remained stagnant in Congress.

Members of the House and Senator have been arguing for weeks on how to resolve the stalemate. Officials said Pfizer’s latest purchase funding came from redistributed funding from the previous COVID-19 relief package.
