U.S. military shoots down unidentified object over Great Lakes region

US Army on Sunday shot down another unidentified objectthis time in the Great Lakes region, federal and state officials said Sunday.

A congressional source briefed on the matter told CBS News that the Pentagon is confident there will be no collateral damage.

A senior Biden administration official said on Saturday that the U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORTHCOM/NORAD) detected radar contact over Montana.

On Sunday, NORTHCOM/NORAD regained radar contact and detected an unmanned object from Montana over Wisconsin and Michigan. Government officials said the object was about 20,000 feet above Lake Huron.

The object’s path and altitude caused concern, and with due caution, President Biden ordered it shot down. No, the official said. It was not assessed as a military threat to anything on the ground, the official added.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the Michigan National Guard is “ready” and is in communication with the federal government about the object.

“Today we are in communication with the Department of Defense regarding operations throughout the Great Lakes region,” tweeted Rep. Jack Bergman, who represents Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the rest of the state’s north. “The U.S. military has decommissioned another ‘object’ above Lake Huron.”

“The object was shot down by US Air Force and National Guard pilots,” said Rep. Elissa Slotkin.

“We are all interested in what exactly this object was and what it is for,” Slotkin tweeted. In response, we continue to seek a full briefing based on our use of the wreckage.”

On Saturday, the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed some of Montana’s airspace for “DoD activities,” closing for about an hour beginning at approximately 4:20 p.m. Pacific time.

NORAD later said in a statement that the shutdown was due to the detection of a “radar anomaly” and that NORAD had “sent a fighter jet to investigate”. However, the aircraft “did not identify an object associated with the radar hit.”

Sunday’s shootout followed a dramatic weekend US official ‘shot down high-altitude object’There was an unidentified object flying over Alaska on Friday shot down in canada Saturday.
