Southern Colorado — A highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 prompted new orders from one of the largest healthcare providers in southern Colorado.
UC Health announced Wednesday, July 28, requiring all employees, providers, volunteers, and partners to be vaccinated with COVID-19 by October 1. 1. “We did this with a lot of thought. We used to require flu vaccination … The focus is on the safety of patients, staff, visitors and everyone walking in the building. That’s it. ” Dr. Michel Baron, Senior Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Management at UC Health.
At this point, approximately 85% of UC Health’s 26,000 employees have been vaccinated. “Vaccination is a very important tool for us to use and is the best way to protect the people and the entire community in our building, in addition to the other layers of protection in our medical environment. That’s the way, “Dr. Baron said.
Employees vaccinated by August 22 will also receive a $ 500 bonus. “This is a good example of how the community, as a business and as an entity, wants to keep everyone healthy and really end this pandemic,” says Dr. Baron.
Vaccines are not required for visitors to the hospital system. The mask is still worn in all clinical settings.
From a legal point of view, Dr. Baron said companies can mandate COVID-19 vaccination. “So far, we have supported the idea that employers can have certain obligations, including vaccination of their employees, at least when challenged in other states in those courts.” Said Dr. Baron.
Patients at UCHealth said the hospital system is currently treating 85 inpatients with COVID-19. This has been increasing since June. “The delta variant shows what happens if you don’t reach a threshold that gives you enough protection to prevent continued spread,” says Dr. Baron.
A valid medical or religious reason is an acceptable exemption from this new policy. Persons in this category must wear a mask at all times while in the UC Health building and will be tested for COVID-19 once a week.
Employees who are not vaccinated and are not exempt will face dismissal.
