The President of the United Nations calls for “immediate, rapid and massive” reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to curb global warming.

Antonio Guterres warned ahead of next week’s UN General Assembly that climate change is progressing faster than expected and fossil fuel emissions have already recovered from the pandemic plunge.

Guterres said in a UN-backed report outlining climate change efforts that recent extreme weather events indicate that no country is safe from climate-related disasters.

But Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, said the report’s warning ignored strong pledges and significant progress already made.
