Nashville, Tennessee (WSMV)-A busy year-long pandemic at the Tennessee Department of Labor Development has caused unemployment to skyrocket.

Chris Cannon, a spokesperson, said the number of unemployment benefits was lower than it was a few months ago, but many still need help.

“While the number of people collecting unemployment is declining, the number of people in the workforce is increasing, indicating that people are leaving the unemployment role and returning to work throughout the state,” Cannon said. Said.

The latest unemployment rate in Tennessee shows that employers added about 25,000 jobs between September and October. Even if new jobs are created, the state’s unemployment rate has risen for the first time in five months.

We know that people need to get back to work. We’re trying to help them get back to work, but we also know they need their unemployment allowance until they find the job, “Cannon said.

Many unemployment federal benefits will end next month.

“If the petitioner has a Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), it is part of the CARES Federal Program. If they have been using the PUA since the start of the pandemic, for example from March 15, the program will last for 39 weeks. The 39 weeks will continue on December 12, “says Cannon.

It is not yet known if states and countries will receive additional support in 2021.

“We are at the mercy of the federal government, and if they offer us new programs, we will implement them as soon as possible,” Canon said. “But so far, a federal program that still benefits tens of thousands of Tennessees. It will end within half a month next month.”

The department is currently trying to help people get back to work through the Tennessee Reemployment Initiative. It provides services that help people get back to work. Everything from resume writing and interview skills to vocational training sharpening.

“It may not be for that eternal job, it may be for a temporary job that you need to manage from now on until you get back to work with your regular job.” Cannon said. “We want to make sure people are back in the workforce before the benefits end so they can continue to provide them to their families.”
