Des Moines, Iowa (AP) — Beef cattle ranchers and others are dissatisfied with the continued low prices and are planning to reverse the long trend of integration and open new slaughterhouses.
A new factory usually costs more than $ 300 million, but it’s still much smaller than a factory owned by a giant of four meat companies that slaughter more than 80% of the country’s cattle. That led to some skepticism about the success of the new independent plant.
David Briggs is the CEO of the proposed plant in western Iowa. He admits that it can be difficult, but says the cow people are risk takers.
