Nicole German was given for four months in preparation for the launch of the Union Station Farmers Market.

The founder of HobNob Events received a call from Union Station’s marketing team in February asking if she could help them as the former market organizer, Boulder County Farmers Market, withdrew. ..

HobNob Events also operates South Pearl Street Farmers Market, Highlands Square Market and Central Park Market. German had already closed applications from other vendors by the time Union Station was asking for her help.

But she faced the challenge.

“We certainly valued the decision in the sprint,” German said. “I was surprised at the order of the events and when Boulder withdrew. I think it was the choice of the local Denver. Thanks to the relationships we have built over the years of running other markets, we made it. I think it makes sense to run it. “

Union Station Nibbles at noon

Chef Tim Kuklinsky, Rioja’s culinary director, was the first chef to be featured at Union Station Farmers Market’s Nibbles at noon, and downtown chefs use products from local vendors to create recipes.

Boulder County Farmers Market withdrew from Union Station and Lafayette Farmers Market in February after launching the Union Station Market in 2016 due to a shortage of diverse vegetable producers. According to previous reports.

The weekly market was previously open from May to November. HobNob Events opened this year’s version on June 4th.

After taking over it, German made some changes.

Previously, Union Station Farmers Market had about 20 vendors. But under HobNob Events, there are currently 34 running on both sides of the Union Station. Most of them are new, such as HearthBread and Forte Farms, but there are also return vendors such as Morton’s Organic Orchards and Bjorn’s Colorado Honey.

German also revives live music, with downtown chefs visiting the market every weekend, using products from local vendors to compile recipes and hand out samples to attendees. Chef Tim Kuklinsky, Rioja’s culinary director, attended the first weekend to make a Panzanella salad.

“I really want it to be a community for chefs,” German said. “I hope downtown chefs come to shop and build new relationships with farmers and producers. Suddenly, they have a great new relationship that supports restaurants and farmers and helps everyone grow. Probably. “

Union Station Flower Scaling

Union Station Farmers Market is open every Saturday until early September.

German and her mom, who help manage the market, arrive by 6:30 am for setup, usually around 2:30 pm. The market is open Saturdays from 9am to 1pm and admission is free.

German wanted a smooth process for vendors. She gave the vendor a drop-off and parking lot to facilitate the unloading process. And she has a crew of people who meet them in the wagon.

“When I plan the market, I think a lot about flow and taste,” German said. “That is, if everything works perfectly, you’ll notice the market flow, if not always. You’ll see the bread seller next to the honey seller next to the cheese and wine. Take care and see if you need power, extra space, or a shaded area. “

German’s start in the event industry was unorthodox.

The 41-year-old from Denver previously owned a tourist-centric TV channel that was played at hotels throughout the city, marketing the channel to South Pearl Street at the same time the organization was trying to bring the farmers market together. I was there. Instead of signing on on the TV channel, the organization asked German if he would run the market.

“Suddenly that was my career,” she said.

German sold the channel two years later and started the HobNob event in 2007 to run the South Pearl Street Farmers Market. We launched Highland Square Market in 2013 and took over Central Park Market in 2020.

HobNob Events also hosts the Steamboat Food & Wine Festival, Cherry Creek North Food & Wine Festival, and Denver Oktoberfest, among other events in the town.

“What I want to apply to all markets is what everyone’s goal is, why they are here, whether this is a side hustle, or they find a retailer for their product and set that goal. It’s about understanding if you want to help achieve it, “German said. “We’re actually small business incubators, so we’re here to help people test their products.”
