Albuquerque, New Mexico (KRQE) – University of New Mexico Is hosting a new summer program for sophomores and seniors. Summer Academy of Architecture and Design Helps high school students gain experience and create portfolios for college.

“This is not the kind of subject that is taught regularly in high school,” said Janet Abrams, director of the program. UNM offers students two sets of two-week programs, one in Albuquerque starting June 21st and the second in Santa Fe starting July 15th.

Abrams said students have many hands-on opportunities to look at what careers in this area offer. “There are many reasons why we want to contribute to the design of our environment. Obviously, we are concerned about sustainability, which is people’s top priority,” Abrams said.

Students are taught by a mix of UNM professors and guest instructors from Los Angeles, Denver and San Francisco. Scholarships are on a first-come, first-served basis, although it costs $ 300 per two-week session.
