Albuquerque, New Mexico (AP) – University of New Mexico We will appeal a ruling that allows graduate students to unite.Albuquerque Journal report Sunday when UNM filed a notice of intent to appeal to the Second District Court of Justice.
Cinnamon Blair, a university spokeswoman, said, “We feel that these issues are important to our mission and that an accurate and thorough legal investigation of the issues is needed, and this is the role of the court.” It states.
University graduate workers first applied for union approval in December 2020. A hearing on the State Civil Service Labor Relations Commission has determined that graduate students are not regular employees because they last one semester.
A graduate student appealed. Both sides had a discussion in front of the board. In August, the board stood by student workers. Earlier this month, the board asked graduate workers to do a “card check” to see if the majority wanted to form a union.
UNM graduate student Ramona Martinsky, chairman of the Graduate Workers Coordination Committee, said he was not surprised by the complaint.
Their action was simply “wasting taxpayers’ money to lawyers,” Marczyski said.
Blair states that the notice of appeal is not intended to negatively reflect the value of graduate student employees.
