APLU has a total of 245 members, including 216 universities, 26 university systems, and 3 affiliates. Among its members are 23 HBCUs, 35 Hispanic colleges, and 56 athletics colleges.

To become a member of APLU, the institution must be an accredited public institution that falls into one of the two Carnegie Research Classifications of PhD Universities. UNO is characterized by being designated as Dr. Carnegie / Research Institute in 2011 and one of the first universities recognized by Carnegie’s Community Engaged University designation.

In addition to being a member of APLU, UNO also holds membership in the City and Metropolitan University Union (CUMU). American Council on Education (AASCU), American Council on Education (ACE); and American Council on Education (AAC & U).
