Update: An arrest warrant issued by Atlanta police on Tuesday night will be obtained in connection with a deadly shooting on July 24, 17 years old, at the Anderson Park swimming pool in Atlanta.
Atlanta (CBS46)-17-year-old Jakari Dillard was shot dead in a pool at Anderson Park on Saturday night with his brother, cousin, and aunt. On Monday, his family returned to the pool to find the gate locked.
The Atlanta City Parks Department has closed all 12 outdoor pools in the city to perform operational maintenance and reassess the safety of visitors and staff. The decision was announced on Sunday night after the shooting that killed Dillard.
“Others had to help,” said Dillard’s mother, Courtney Dillard. “They had to take me to the pool,” she shouted as she remembered Dillard’s aunt and brother’s efforts to save him after being injured in the shooting.
Police say Dillard and the shooter were involved in a controversy and another young man pulled out his gun.
According to his family, Jakari was an up-and-coming senior at the Life Christian Academy and loved to do bright, entertaining and convenient work. Going to the community pool was a family treat.
“If I just said no, I would still have a baby. They wouldn’t go anywhere,” said the sad mother.
“Just put yourself in. We’re not going to be shut down. This is something I’ll never forget,” continued Dillard. Dillard’s family says the archer was probably a young man, 18 or 19 years old. They say he seems to be comfortable and familiar with the area and believes he lives nearby.
“We have to be together,” said Dillard’s aunt Chris Sandra Thomas. “This can’t keep happening. We’re killing each other. You don’t have to worry about the police. It’s our own kind to slaughter each other.”
Dillard is one of three deaths on a fierce weekend with at least six shootings in the city.
After 1 am on Sunday, 38-year-old Gabriel Parker was shot dead at a large block party of nearly 1,000 people attended by James Jackson Parkway NE and Dr. Hamilton E. Holmes.
GBI says Atlanta police have appeared to find two men with guns. The policeman shot a gun. Parker was killed. Another man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Police have not yet determined whether a policeman’s gun or another gun killed Parker. GBI was waiting for the autopsy to be completed on Monday afternoon.
