Colorado Springs — This is what to expect when the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs celebrates its 2022 class. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III will be the speech speaker for the graduation ceremony of the US Air Force Military School class in 2022 on Wednesday.

First, expect heavy traffic in the area near the U.S. Air Force Military School on the north side of the town, for all visitors to the town, as well as those looking for a view of Thunderbird practice and performance. please.

Monday, May 23

  • 11:15 am -US Air Force Thunderbirds arrives and conducts research flight
  • 12:00 pm-4: 00 pm -Planetarium Open House-John’s Recent Story- U.S. Air Force Academy Planetarium Open to the Public
  • From 4 pm to 5:30 pm -Thunderbird pilots and non-pilot graduates meet and greet (for cadets and families)

Tuesday, May 24

  • From 7:30 am to 9:00 am -Cadets aerial and cadet honorary guard demonstrations
  • to be decided -US Olympic gold medalist speed skater Erin Jackson flies with Thunderbird and jumps out of Peterson Space Force Base
  • to be decided -Thunderbird practice flight (see below for precautions regarding road closures)
  • 2:00 pm-4:00 pm -Planetarium Open House-John’s Recent Story- U.S. Air Force Academy Planetarium Open to the Public
  • From 12:30 pm to 9:30 pm -Test run type (limited guest)

Wednesday, May 25-USAFA Graduation Ceremony Schedule:

  • 7:00 am: Falcon Stadium Open Gate
  • From 7:45 am to 8:25 am: Performances by some of the US Air Force Academy’s elite clubs.
    • Honorary Guard begins with 7:45 am
    • Cadet Chorale begins with 8:00 am
    • Saber drill team 8:20 am
    • A cappella group “In The Stairwell” 8:25 am
  • 9:30 am: The ceremony will begin and you will need a ticket. You cannot enter after the ceremony starts.
  • Following the graduation ceremony, there will be a flyover by the Air Force’s aerial demonstration team, Thunderbird! (Refer to the following for precautions regarding road closures)

Prohibitions and dress code:

At the graduation ceremony, both men and women are required to wear business casual or casual dresses. Army members at the stand are expected to wear flight caps and uniforms.

Items allowed at Stillman Parade Field and Falcon Stadium

  • Food is allowed, but must be displayed in a clear 1 gallon Ziploc bag. Each ticket holder can only have one 1 gallon of Ziploc.
  • Sunscreen is allowed, but is limited to tubes of 6 ounces or less. Bottles and aerosol sprays cannot be brought into the stadium.
  • Factory-sealed clear soft plastic water bottles are limited in size to 24 ounces. Water is the only beverage allowed to be brought into the parade field or stadium. Visitors and infants with medical conditions may be an exception.
  • If you have an infant, you can use an infant diaper bag and carrier pack.

Prohibited matter

  • Illegal substances, including marijuana, which is illegal in federal property.
  • Firearms, knives, utility knives, scissors, or other weapons.
  • Alcohol, glass containers, bottles, cans, aerosol sprays, hardside (or Nalgene) plastic bottles.
  • A handbag larger than 12 x 12 x 12 inches.
  • Backpacks such as bota bags, wine skins and camel bags.
  • Laser pointers, fireworks, or items that security personnel consider unsafe.
  • Unapproved banners or signs over 18×24 inches.
  • Pets. Service animals that comply with Americans with Disabilities Act are permitted.
  • Sticks, bats, poles, umbrellas, football, frisbees, or inflatable balls.
  • Artificial noise maker.
  • Baby seat or large stroller. Folding strollers are allowed.
  • Items that cannot be easily inspected.
  • All types of smoking or cigarettes, including E-Cigarettes.
  • Seat back wider than 19 inches. There are no armrests.

Thunderbird Performance:

The U.S. Air Force Academy has invited speed skater Erin Jackson, who won the 2022 Olympic Gold Medal, to fly over Colorado Springs on May 24 with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. She is Jackson, the first black woman in history to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport of speed skating. Inviting outstanding Olympic athletes to Thunderbird’s graduation flight began in 2019 with Mikaela Shiffrin.

On the start date, Thunderbird will perform the famous flyover as graduates throw festive hats. Everyone must stay in the stadium until the aerial demonstration is complete.

Road Closed:

Closures include the Santa Fe Trail and the road below the show area. It is from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm. Tuesday, May 24th, and Wednesday, May 25th, from 10am to 2:30 pm. Closures include:

  • Stadium Boulevard-From Pine Drive to Northgate Boulevard
  • Community Center Drive-From Stadium Boulevard to E. Douglas Drive
  • Academy Drive-From Stadium Boulevard to Lot 6
  • Santa Fe Trail from the Three Crossings Bridge to the Parade Loop

For public safety, drivers should stop along Interstate 25 and the Academy Road and be careful not to watch Thunderbird performances.
