Budapest, Hungary (AP) — Andrea Fuentes prevented the tragedy at the FINA World Championships with her quick reaction.
A US coach knew something was wrong when he saw artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez sinking to the bottom of the pool during Wednesday’s solo free routine.
Fully dressed Fuentes jumped in.
She swam into the unresponsive Alvarez, placed her arms around her and lifted her to the surface. Helped another person get her out of the pool.
Alvarez, a two-time Olympic athlete, was faint. According to USA Artistic Swimming, she was treated by medical staff and now feels much better.
“Anita has been evaluated by medical staff and will continue to be monitored,” the organization said in a statement.
Before fainting, Alvarez had already participated in seven events in the championship. These tournaments lasted for six days.
She will be competing in the team final on Friday. But she’s not sure if she’s enough to swim. USA Artistic Swimming said Alvarez and her medical staff will determine if she can compete.
