US gymnast tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of Tokyo Olympics – Fresno, California

Members of the US women’s gymnastics team have tested positive for COVID-19 since arriving in Tokyo.

Japanese officials confirmed that the positive test belonged to the team’s teenager, but did not disclose the teenager’s identity.

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has confirmed that women who test positive are replacement players for the team. She was sent to a nearby hotel for quarantine.

The gymnast was with the team at a training facility in the suburbs of Tokyo when the test was positive.

This is part of the growing trend of COVID-19-positive Olympic athletes and training staff, including tennis star Coco Gauff.

Statement from USOPC:
“The health and safety of our athletes, coaches and staff is our number one priority. We can confirm that the female gymnastics team’s replacement players are COVID-19 positive. Athletes according to local rules and protocols. Is a quarantine hotel. We cannot provide any further information at this time due to our respect for personal privacy. “
