It has been closed since September 17, and traffic has been rerouted to the Eagle Pass port of entry, officials said.

Last week, as many as 15,000 migrants, mostly from Haiti, were crammed into a filthy tent city under a bridge near Rio Grande, hoping to be dealt with for asylum. However, US authorities have dissolved the camp and eliminated all immigrants.

“Currently, there are no people under the bridge,” said Bruno Rosano, Mayor of Del Rio, on Friday.

According to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mallorcus, at least 2,000 people have been deported and 5,000 are still in process and could be deported. Officials said the rest were either released to the United States under asylum proceedings or voluntarily returned to Mexico.

Mallorcus rejected the call to stop deportation. “Despite the tragic and catastrophic quake, we have actually decided that Haiti can actually accept individuals,” he said on Friday.

The mayor of Del Rio urged the federal government to do a better job listening to local officials he said warned of the impending crisis. According to the mayor, at least 10 babies were born while the migrants were in the camp.
