Washington — The Biden administration has sent 3.5 million Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to Argentina on Friday, White House officials told CBS News. This shipment, arriving on Saturday, is the largest shipment of COVID-19 vaccines the United States has ever made to Latin American countries and is the first mRNA vaccine to be delivered.

A White House official quoted President Biden as saying, “The United States will be a weapon of vaccine in the fight against COVID-19. Delivering these safe and effective vaccines to the Argentine people I’m proud of what I can do. ”

South American countries are devastated by the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, Argentina exceeded more than 100,000 deaths and nearly 5 million cases of COVID-19 since the outbreak of the global epidemic, according to statistics released by the Argentine Ministry of Health. Argentina, with a population of 45 million, is the fifth country in Latin America to reach that number.

According to officials, both US and Argentine science teams and regulators have worked together to ensure “quick delivery of safe and effective vaccine lots to Argentina.”

The government is increasing the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine to Latin America and around the world, including recent shipments to neighboring Haiti in the Western Hemisphere. The White House said Wednesday night that 500,000 modana vaccines had arrived in the Caribbean island nation. Caribbean island nations have been struggling after the assassination of their president, Jovenel Moise, earlier this month.

In addition, the Biden administration has promised to send 80 million US doses abroad. 500 million doses of Pfizer vaccine for countries in need of it.. Doses are typically distributed through COVAX, a global entity working to ensure fair access to COVID testing and vaccines, and are delivered to 92 low- and middle-income countries and the African Union.

The government announced on Friday that the United States will send 25 million COVID-19 vaccines to Africa in the coming weeks, according to two White House officials. According to the World Health Organization, Africa was hit by a deadly virus last month in more than one million new COVID cases. It is also said that African hospitals have reached the “limit”.

Government officials have confirmed that the first shipment will consist of a Johnson & Johnson single-shot vaccine and will be shipped to Ethiopia, Burkina Faso and Djibouti. The United States will also coordinate delivery to the African Union and COVAX and African countries. Forty-nine African countries will be vaccinated over the next few weeks.
