Fresno, California 2021-04-08 20:25:49 –

El Segundo, CA-The Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo was announced Thursday to serve as a field command site for the US Space Force.

Governor Gavin Newsom said the military would establish Space Systems Command at a base near LAX, but did not provide a schedule for when that would happen.

The Governor said in a statement that Field Command had “national authority over launch and procurement.”

“This represents a lot of high-paying jobs as it is a significant investment in California’s significant aerospace and defense industry and continues to rebuild its economy more than ever before,” Newsom added.

Ted Ryu, co-chair of the California Aerospace Caucus, added in a statement that Space Systems Command will oversee efforts to develop, acquire, launch and maintain military space systems.

“As the days go by, space becomes more important to our national security and commercial activities. We are pleased that Southern California and Los Angeles Air Force Bases will become an increasingly focused center for space,” Lieu said. Said. “Southern California is already a leader in aerospace and space innovation, and with the establishment of the Space Systems Command at LA AFB, our region will be positioned for further growth.”

The Space Force was launched in December 2019 under President Donald Trump as the first new military service since the Air Force was founded as an independent organization in 1947. It operates as part of the Air Force.
