Biden administration officials said the United States will increase imports of powdered milk as part of its efforts to mitigate the national shortage.
The shortage of infant formula was partially caused by the closure of a Michigan manufacturing plant after two babies who consumed Michigan products suffered a bacterial infection and died.
Officials said the Food and Drug Administration will announce concrete actions to increase formula imports in the coming days. The United States produces 98% of the infant formula it consumes. Chile, Ireland, Mexico and the Netherlands are potential sources of additional imports, officials said.
Abbott Nutrition, the nation’s largest infant formula maker, issued several infant formula recalls in February. The move occurred after four infants who consumed the product from a plant in Sturgis, Michigan, were hospitalized for an infection with the bacterium Cronobacter sakazakii. Two of the babies died.
Abbott has closed its Sturgis plant and recalled a formula powered by Similac PM 60/40, Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare manufactured at a facility in Michigan. According to the company, Cronobacter Sakazaki was found in the factory, but not in the area where the product was manufactured. According to Abbott, all finished products tested returned negative for bacteria.
FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instructed parents to check Abbott website Check if there are any products to be recalled. The FDA advises consumers not to use recalled Similac, Alimentum, or EleCare infant formula.
Due to the plant closure and recall, parents had a hard time finding powdered milk.
In the first week of May, 43% of infant formula supplies were out of stock in stores across the United States, according to Datasembly, which tracks retail data. Abbott said the Sturges plant could be reopened within two weeks if the FDA approves, but it will take up to eight weeks for the product to hit the shelves.
President Joe Biden met with Wal-Mart, Target, Reckitt Benkeiser, and Gerber on Thursday to discuss ways to mitigate the shortage. Biden asked the Federal Trade Commission to use its power to monitor reports of price cuts in shortages, and the Justice Department was the state prosecutor’s chief to deal with predatory actions by retailers. We are cooperating with.
The CDC has not identified additional cases of infection associated with the powered formula, The investigation has been completed.. The state health department requires reporting of any infant Cronobacter infections found.
According to the CDC, Cronobacter can cause blood infections and swelling around the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include fever, poor eating, excessive crying, very low energy, and seizures.
