Washington (AP) — The Justice Department has launched an extensive investigation into Phoenix police to see if police officers are using excessive force to abuse people who are experiencing homelessness.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced an investigation into the city of Phoenix and the Phoenix Police Station on Thursday. The investigation also investigated whether police were engaged in discriminatory police activities and to determine if police were retaliation against those engaged in protected First Amendment activities. He said he would work.

The new investigation, known as “patterns or practices,” investigates whether there are unconstitutional or illegal police patterns or practices. This is usually a thorough review of the entire police station.
