(NEXSTAR) — Members of the US women’s gymnastics team tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before the Tokyo Olympics, the US Olympic Committee said Monday.
Gymnasts are replacement players for the women’s Olympic team and are isolated.
The USOPC does not say whether world champion Simone Biles and other gold medal-winning favorites have been isolated for contact tracing. The positive test was the latest in the increasing line of daily reports of athletes and other people who tested positive in the Olympics with a delayed pandemic. The unnamed gymnast was the first American.

Since the 2011 World Championships, Americans have produced all-round gold medalists in the last four Olympics and won all major team titles. This has contributed significantly to the winning streak in Tokyo, largely due to Biles’ unparalleled brilliance.
The COVID-19 pandemic will hold the Tokyo Olympics, one year behind, on July 23rd.
