From Tokyo-The US women’s gymnastics team’s bid for the third consecutive Olympic title has made a good start.

A group of four women, led by Olympic champion Simone Biles, finished second in qualifying after Russia.

This is the first time Americans have failed to lead at the end of a major event of more than a decade.

Biles outperformed the all-round with a total of 57.731 points, but lacked her normal accuracy.

The 24-year-old made serious mistakes at three events. Russia’s team score of 171.619 was more than one point higher than the United States, but both teams will start from scratch in the finals.
