Now that the rainy season is over, culverts in the city are draining rainwater and flowing down the streets and roads away from the roads.
Before it rains, the Washington State Department of Transportation inspects these concrete or metal tunnels for damage. You can prevent fish from using them on the move.. However, there are plenty of spaces to inspect, and these spaces are often small and inaccessible to people.
So students at the University of Washington created a rover called HydroCUB. This rover can enter sewers, culverts, or other small areas and send back live video status reports.
The team worked on the rover throughout the pandemic.
“The pandemic was difficult because I was away from my family and friends,” said the senior researcher. Qishi Zhou, UW Master’s student in Electrical and Computer Engineering. “It was also challenging because I was in Minnesota and my teammates were in Seattle, so we had to ship things back and forth. In addition, due to supply chain issues, many parts Was not available and I had to do an extensive search to find them. But I was uplifted because I knew this project would solve a real problem. “
The goal is for WSDOT, who proposed the idea, to use the tools to look for vegetation, cracks, debris, and other potential “fish barriers” in Culvert. The HydroCUB is designed to operate from a distance via a 300-foot long cable that powers the rover and sends the video back to the operator.
This rover was designed as part of the University of Washington’s two-quarter industry capstone program, where students work with clients to design solutions to real-world problems. In this case, WSDOT asked the UW team if they could build a cheap and robust device for monitoring culvert. The organization has worked with the UW team throughout the process to review designs and make suggestions. This climax program is sponsored by the UW Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as Electrical and Computer Engineering.
“It’s a thrill to work on something that is trying to solve many problems,” Zhou said. “Hydro CUB is a unique product with both reliability and low cost. It also provides a platform for future students to make further improvements and tests.”
