Atlanta, Georgia (CBS46) – Health officials said COVID-19 vaccination is more urgent than ever.

The Georgia Public Health Service is encouraging Georgians over the age of 12 to be vaccinated as the number of new COVID-19 cases increases daily and the Delta variant becomes widespread.

The COVID case rate in Georgia has increased by 204% in the last 14 days.

As of Wednesday, the total number of new cases was 4,612, the highest number per day since mid-February. Hospitalization has increased by about 50% in the last 14 days and deaths have increased by about 18% over the same period.

Immunization is stalled throughout the state, with only 40% of Georgians being fully vaccinated.

The CDC estimates that Delta variants account for 78% of new COVID cases in Georgia, making vaccination more urgent than ever.

The new Delta variant is more than twice as easy to spread from one person to another as compared to the previous strain, with the most cases and serious consequences at low vaccination rates.

Virtually all hospitalizations and deaths remain unvaccinated.

Kathleen E. Toomy, MD, MPH, Director of Public Health, Georgia, said:

“Unfortunately, we can expect the number of COVIDs to continue to grow. People who have not been vaccinated or who skipped the second vaccination are targeted for infection.” Vaccination is COVID- The best way to prevent the spread of 19 and delta variants. High immunization rates help reduce the spread of the virus in your community and elsewhere and prevent the emergence of new variants. “

If you receive either the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, you must receive a second dose to ensure that you are vaccinated. completely It is protected. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after the last dose of vaccine.

The COVID vaccine approved for use in the United States is safe and effective against COVID-19 and circulating variants. Vaccination is the best defense to prevent serious illness, hospitalization and death. Delta variants cause some “vaccine breakthroughs”, which means infections in fully vaccinated people, but most breakthroughs are still mild.

The CDC states that in areas of fairly high infection rates, all individuals (including fully vaccinated individuals) should wear masks in public indoor environments to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and Delta variants. Recommended.
