Coastal Bend Food Bank announced on Wednesday that a new $ 30 million food bank facility is under construction as part of its capital campaign, Building Hope.
Food banks have partnered with Valero Energy at the venue. It is scheduled to open in early 2023.
The new 100,000-square-foot building is located on the outskirts of Bear Lane and is expected to begin construction by the end of the year. The company donated the first large donation of $ 1.5 million to a food bank.
Kevin Lassahn, vice president and general manager of Valero Corpus Christi Refineries, said the company has long been a supporter of the Coastal Bend Food Bank and a partner in addressing local food insecurity.
“Unfortunately, the need for their services continues to grow. Valero is one of the first major donors to help food banks build new state-of-the-art facilities to support it. I’m proud of that. Keep up the important task of making sure people have food in their stomachs. “
The campaign focuses on raising funds to build new, larger food banks to meet growing needs within the service area of 11 counties and provide nutritious food and education. .. Food banks also host food rations on the premises.
Since 1982, Coastal Bend Food Bank has been operating in a 22,000 square foot building. The need for food aid is increasing every year in coastal bends. In 2020, food banks distributed more than £ 13m of food to families in the service area.
Meeting the needs of the most vulnerable neighbors in the current structure is a challenge, especially during natural disasters and ongoing pandemics.
Bea Hanson, Executive Director of Coastal Bend Food Bank, said the mission to “fight hunger and promote health through food ration and nutrition education” cannot be achieved without the help of local volunteers and donors.
“Valero has become a champion by supporting food bank efforts with volunteers and financial support. By impacting and providing, Valero has helped realize the food bank’s future home. We welcome and thank all our donors and hope to help individuals and their families move forward.
“By working together as a community, we can accomplish the essential task of building hope.”
